Does Jivani think he would have been better off without all this? Does he think young men should pursue different passions than himself? And what did he think was so great about Frantz Fanon, whose work inspired the Black Panthers? /8

Why doesn't Jamil Jivani want young men to have the same opportunities he did?
Jivani knows first-hand the benefits of both critical race studies and equity initiatives, yet he's based his brand on a fierce opposition to them.

By Jivani's own account, without learning about Black liberation or getting financial aid, he wouldn't have made it to the Ivy League, since it was after seeing him give a presentation on Marcus Garvey and the Nation of Islam that a Yale professor told him he should apply. /7

Both Jivani and his friend JD Vance have called for the dismantling of DEI programs, but they were only able to attend Yale (and meet each other) because of them –JD Vance's education was paid for by the Yellow Ribbon program for veterans. /6

Jivani has spoken about why he's no longer a Liberal, but that doesn't change how these equity programs he describes as belittling to minorities were put in place to help people just like him–and they actually did! /5

Jivani has called CRT radical and destabilizing, and called DEI demeaning to minorities, yet his memoir shows that when he was most vulnerable, both were hugely helpful for him. Thanks to Yale's financial aid policies he could attend the school on a full-ride scholarship. /4

From Jivani's memoir (which reads a lot like Hillbilly Elegy) /3

Back in 2013, Jivani told the Toronto Star that a course called “Cultures of Resistance in the Americas: The African American Experience,” along with the support of his professor, was the reason he was able to complete his studies. /2
