Amazon was thought it was cute to call their webservices "the mechanical Turk" after the fraudulent chess-playing robot with a person inside.

But these revelations about Waymo, and also Amazon shops... the fact they they hide and must be forced to admit "what we claimed was software is just […]

Tapes sold out very quick. There's talk of a repress. Let me know if you might be interested and I'll save you a copy!

Long Term Projects

Some projects run for a long time. Mechanical Techno has definitely been the one I've worked on most since beginning it back in 2014 (here's a timeline). I've been collecting found objects most of my life (as discussed in the last post), though I didn't really think of it as […]

Turns out jazz fusion is rubbish as running music.

Listening to lots more music this year so far. Music is great! Feeling inspired by listening.

Collecting a whole deck of cards (by finding them on the street)

Picking things up in the street has been a habit since I was a child. I always had pockets full of nuts and bolts and other interesting bits and bobs I'd collected. When I started compiling sketch books for visual research around […]

Wondering if my pixey/Pixelfed server has gone kaput, it never seems to let me log on any more.

Working from the climbing wall this morning. So far just warmed up, did my physio exercises, and checked the shared email inboxes.

Picked up a few records in the bargain bin at Rough Trade yesterday - 75% reduction makes any LP about a fiver, which is great.
Got an album I'd already paid to download last year, when I couldn't afford the price of the vinyl. Another album I was at the launch event for but, again, couldn't […]

Sharing a few more bits and bobs on Freecycle. Some household items (ornament shelves, underbed storage bags). I'm always slightly surprised by the volume of responses.
And working out the fairest/best way to respond. The only way is to go with first-come-first-served, right? Though sometimes […]

A run in the mud and drizzle round Hollow Ponds.
Experiments with the newish fell running shoes.
1. Would I immediately get shin splints like I did last time wearing them? (My normal road shoes have a lot more heel padding)
2. Are they actually any good in wet / muddy / uneven ground?

1. No […]

There was an advert on the telly for something or other in the early 2000s where Gary Rhodes was cooking some sausages, and he said, "the secret is NOT to prick them," and quite often that phrase pops into my head, unconnected to anything that's happening.
Advertising does work.

Collaborators and London venues lists – mostly for me

I've updated the links page on the website today with two things: a list of most of the people I have collaborated with (and, in some cases, continue to work with) and a list of local venues I often go to. As I move away from commercial […]

Doom metal feels like a genre best played off vinyl.

Small victory but I now have the telly linked up to my desktop pc, so can more easily watch streams/downloads of films etc.

Sleaford Mods in conversation with Stewart Lee was entertaining.
The audience questions less so, some boring people in that room! Glad I went though. Look forward to giving their new album a listen.

A new home for the Mammoth Beat Organ

This weekend I visited The Nest in Oxford, which is the new home for the Mammoth Beat Organ, to show the custodians the ropes and make some mechanical noises. The Nest is a "wholly inclusive space for young people wanting to express themselves through music […]
