The next region in New Zealand I’ll look at is the Wellington region. Wellington is the New Zealand capital, and the greater Wellington region has a population of ~430K, third largest in the country behind Auckland and Christchurch. 1/ 🧪

I am very very jealous that this family on Prince Edward Island (Canada) had a small meteor hit their sidewalk and managed to catch it on their door cam in what is likely the first audio and visual recording of a meteor strike!

It’s a dark day for research in Aotearoa New Zealand and the ramifications for the country are huge. Minister Judith Collins has just announced our blue-skies funder will no longer fund humanities & social science research and that 50% of what is funded must have economic benefit.

This morning has a nice write up by @jamiemorton.bsky.social of our recent work investigating how Taupō volcano responded to shaking from the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake: www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/surprise-...
Kaikōura 2016 earthquake linked to unrest at Taupō supervolcano - 500km away
It’s been a question on the minds of geoscientists - can big quakes trigger eruptions?
