Today was a five subway, six LIRR, one NICE bus day. ✨public transit✨

LIRR TVM crashed and rebooted.

Why are these headways always so bad on Queens Blvd?
January 17, 2026 at 3:55 PM
@thelirrtoday.com Bought paper CityTicket from Bayside to Grand Central at 5:20 pm, the 5:30 pm gets cancelled, and branch service suspended. Meanwhile:

The MetroCard may no longer be being sold, but I started a new 30-day unlimited card cycle today.

Via ticket pricing wasn’t adjusted to the CityTicket fares, and actually went up. They also don’t display the Day Pass box under fare info for some reason.

Zone 1 to 1 via Jamaica currently $9.25 off-peak, increasing to $9.50 Jan 4, even though zones 1 and 3 are being re-priced to $5.25 off-peak.

The MTA website has been updated to reflect that Combo Tickets from zone 1 are lowering in price from $14.75 to $13.25 beginning January 4.

With the re-pricing of zones 1 and 3 to CityTicket fares, that means Jamaica to Poughkeepsie, or New Haven for $13.25.

I just took three subway trips, each with a transfer, and didn’t have to wait more than four minutes for any of the trains to arrive. Why can’t service be like this all the time?

(F -> L, L -> 4/5, 7 -> E/F)
December 20, 2025 at 12:35 AM
The L train’s “ever think you’d be able to charge a subway ride” messaging is still going to be there after MetroCard sales end, and until these trains are taken out of service, won’t it?

With past fare hikes you've had to start a new 7/30-day MetroCard cycle by a certain date after the hike for the card to work. We know MetroCard sales are ending Dec 31, but has MTA put out any guidance for remaining unlimited cards? @ndhapple.bsky.social @jmartineznyc.bsky.social

Just got a new MetroCard, expiration date is 08/31/2026.

@mta.info Run more trains. This level of weekend service for our “world class city” is garbage.

These headways are garbage.

@thelirrtoday.com Have you ever thought about proposed fares and projected ridership levels if they flattened the LIRR into three zones - City, Nassau, and Suffolk?
September 19, 2025 at 12:28 AM
LIRR conductors doing a bang up job today - no ticket check from Forest Hills to Penn Station this morning, and no ticket check now from Penn Station to Woodside.

I’m at 67 Av to refill my 30-day MetroCard, and the dude using the machine ahead of me just did the same.

Good doggo on commuter rail.

Sigh.

This would now cost $8.75 to mail, only ten years later.
August 1, 2025 at 4:06 PM
They're essentially re-pricing and merging zones 1 and 3, but they're doing nothing to make the monthly ride multiple in line with the other zones.

Monthly break even points:
Zone 3: 29 peak trips
Zones 4-9: 20 peak trips
Zone 10: 19 peak trips
Zone 12: 18 peak trips
Zone 14: 15 peak trips

3 min, then 39 minutes. Garbage service.

Waiting for my train at Jamaica, and in about ten minutes I’ve already saved six people from buying off-peak tickets into Manhattan at the TVMs, and told them about CityTicket instead, and where it’s hidden in the menu. Why is LIRR actively hostile to its passengers? @thelirrtoday.bsky.social
