Interesting work that we conducted from the Student Council of
@iscb.bsky.social to estimate the impact of the COVID19 pandemics on early career researchers in computational biology!
Thanks for leading this effort Farzana Rahman and to the entire team!

A collab referred me to this paper which I of course read when it came out in 2013. However, as a mid-way PhD student my capacity to deeply understand its details was pretty limited. 12 years later, I can understand much more! I really recomend this jewel!

After months of buildup, it’s finally real! 🎉 The Evolutionary Systems Biophysics Group (ESBG) is officially alive at @bsc-cns.bsky.social . Proud to start this new adventure as a Ramon y Cajal Junior Group Leader🧬
Thanks to all who have been part of this process!

CATH turns 30 years old 🥳
They celebrate with a Symposium on September 16th! I'll be presenting our work: "An Atlas of Energetic Evolutionary Constraints Across Protein Families"

Unbelievable selection of speakers! So if you are around London, you can register to attend:

Finally online: my 1st current opinion article & my 1st article with only 2 authors, small dreams I had since my PhD student years! I hope you enjoy reading it! "Frustration, dynamics, and catalysis" together with my mentor Diego Ferreiro ⭐️

Happy that our proposal "MEGA-scale Frustration Analysis of the Protein Universe: Evolution, Dynamics, and SNV Impact (MEGAFrustratEDS)" got selected to be funded by @ageinves.bsky.social! This is the 1st research grant to fund my team at @bsc-cns.bsky.social as a Ramon y Cajal Researcher! Thankful⭐️

1 week away to go to Liverpool to one more
@iscb.bsky.social #ISMB2025! It's my favourite event of the year!

Happy to chair @3dsig.bsky.social and the #LGBTQIA+ meet up!

Looking forward to meet all the friends and colleagues! Let's organisé for coffees & dinners! ⭐️🎶🤝

We give our perspective in aspects such as:
*How distal mutations affect activity via dynamics
*How frustration affects motions in different timescales (µs–ms)
*ProteinMPNN, frustration and function

⚖️ Fig 2: Proteins evolved a “just right” frustration level
Enzyme catalysis involves transitions between internal and external states.
Too little frustration = motions freeze ❄️
Too much = chaos 🌪️
Just right = productive conformational transitions (FIMs) for catalysis 🧬

📊 Fig 1: Frustration in dynamic energy landscapes
A: the dynamic energy funnel, proteins fold into a low-energy native ensemble, but local frustration adds ruggedness.
B: how this frustration enables FIMs to link conformational substates (CS) across the catalytic cycle.

🧠 What is local frustration?
It’s when some interactions in a folded structure are energetically "suboptimal", leading to competing conformations (Conformational Substates or CS).
These CS enable functionally important motions (FIMs) needed for catalysis.

🚨We've updated our preprint "Frustration, Dynamics, and Catalysis" ✨ We appreciate RT ☺️

A short 🧵1/8: We expanded the conceptual connection between the energy landscapes theory and catalysis, added new figures, and clarified how local frustration shapes enzyme function.

Our FrustraEvo web server has been relocated from Buenos Aires to Barcelona! We have fixed several issues and the resource should be more stable now! Looking forward to see how people use it :)

Our reviewers finished the selection of talks for this year's @3DSIG_ISCB @ ISMB! We had more excellent abstracts than we could accept! Notification have been sent to all authors! Check your emails!

We have a great programme ahead! Congratulations to the selected authors!

Excited to share our opinion preprint article: "Frustration, dynamics and catalysis" where we discuss the rol of local frustration in how enzymes work to transform substrates into products

It was a pleasure, like always, to work with Prof. Diego Ferreiro on this!

We have reviewed almost 2 decades of research in local frustration applied to proteins and also give new perspectives to be applied in other realms such as the brain! ⭐️🧑‍🔬

Everything comes to an end but memories remain!!
We had a great 3DSIG/3DBioinfo event in "sunny" Barcelona this week!! I have enjoyed so much to help organising it & to have such great minds all together sharing science for 3 days!!

Aufwiedersehen friends! For more science & friendships to come! ⭐

Great thoughts by Prof. Yves Moreau! We, academics, have the moral duty to resist & to keep speaking up against the totalitarian technocracy that is proposed by these billionaires ✊
