Kerntechnische Anlagen
Im Nov. 1960 ging in Unterfranken nahe Aschaffenburg mit dem Versuchs-Atomkraftwerk Kahl das 1. dt KKW in Betrieb. Als letzte von insgesamt 36 kommerziellen Kernreaktoren wurden 1989 das KKW Neckarwestheim II & der Block 5 des KKWs Greifswald mit dem Netz synchronisiert. Zwischen 1957 & 2004 wurden in D etwa 110 kerntechnische Anlagen in Betrieb genommen.

Mit dem Gesetz zur geordneten Beendigung der Nutzung der Kernenergie zur gewerblichen Erzeugung von Elektrizität vom 22. April 2002 wurden in D neue Rahmenbedingungen für die Kernenergienutzung geschaffen. Die geordnete Beendigung wurde als einer der Zwecke des Atomgesetzes (AtG) formuliert. Ausgangspunkt für die schrittweise Beendigung des Betriebs der KKWs war eine durchschnittliche Gesamtbetriebszeit von 32 Jahren. Im Jahr 2010 beschloss der Gesetzgeber, die Laufzeiten der noch in Betrieb befindlichen KKW zu verlängern.

Als Folge des Reaktorunfalls in Fukushima (Japan) am 11. März 2011 beschloss der Deutsche Bundestag am 30. Juni 2011 mit großer Mehrheit das "13. Gesetz zur Änderung des Atomgesetzes", das am 6. Aug. 2011 in Kraft getreten ist. Mit Inkrafttreten des Gesetzes erlosch für 8 Kernkraftwerksblöcke die Berechtigung zum Leistungsbetrieb & es wurden feste Daten zur Abschaltung der dt KKWs festgelegt

Das 19. Gesetz zur Änderung des Atomgesetzes sah einen befristeten Weiterbetrieb der 3 letzten im Leistungsbetrieb befindlichen KKW Emsland, Isar 2 & Neckarwestheim II – über das vorgesehene Enddatum für den Leistungsbetrieb am 31. Dezember 2022 hinaus – bis zum Ablauf des 15. April 2023 vor. Hierdurch sollten im Winter 2022/23 zusätzliche Erzeugungskapazitäten im dt Stromnetz bereitstehen, um einen positiven Beitrag zur elektrischen Energieversorgungssicherheit insgesamt & zur Netzsicherheit zu leisten.

Hjalti Vignisson, the owner of the place, says the matter is closed in his eyes, but says he stands behind his employees 100%. The staff group is diverse and he is ready to stand by their decisions if they feel they are being violated.

He says neither employees nor guests were harmed, but a water jug was broken and about 50 glasses were left inside the premises.

"There was just an incident where an individual was clearly being called out for something bad. But it's incredibly annoying that people would behave like this," says Hjalti.

It's not new that there are problems on Hlemmur
He says he has contacted the police but does not anticipate pressing charges in the case, as the police have told him that there is little they can do in cases like this. It is his understanding that the police have previously met the man.

Hjalti says that the problems and troubles in Hlemmur are not new and that the 2Guys staff have not been immune to them, although incidents like this are exceptions. After the City of Reykjavík undertook construction in the area and beautified it, the situation has improved somewhat.

In April 2025, the North Anatolian Fault Zone beneath the Sea of Marmara in northwestern Turkey, near Istanbul, experienced its strongest earthquake in over 60 years. In a new study, now published in the journal Science, a research team led by Prof. Dr. Patricia Martínez-Garzón from the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam analyzed nearly two decades of seismic data surrounding the magnitude M 6.2 earthquake of April 23, 2025. The analysis of fault dynamics and aftershock patterns across multiple timescales reveals a remarkable sequence of magnitude >5 earthquakes along the fault over the past ~15 years, propagating eastward and all occurring so far on partially creeping sections of the tectonic fault zone. However, further east, just outside Istanbul, lies the completely locked section of the Marmara Fault This eruption has stored large amounts of energy and could therefore trigger a significantly stronger earthquake, with correspondingly devastating consequences for the metropolis of 18 million inhabitants. Magma accumulation slow but steady in recent weeks
Magma accumulation under Svartsengi is in a similar pattern to the past few weeks. In the run-up to the eruptions at the Sundhnúk crater series, the rate of magma accumulation has been variable. Looking at recent eruptions, model calculations show that the rate of inflow has gradually decreased with each eruption. However, the rate has remained fairly constant over the past two weeks.

While magma accumulation is present, the probability of magma flow and eruption remains elevated, but uncertainty about the timing of the next eruption is greater when magma accumulation is slow. The uncertainty about the timing, given the current rate of magma accumulation, is within a few months.

The amount of magma that has accumulated under Svartsengi since the last eruption is the fifth largest to date
Measurements and modeling show that since March 2024, the amount of magma needed to trigger a new magma flow or eruption appears to have increased compared to previous events. According to modeling, the volume of magma that has accumulated under Svartsengi between eruptions that have occurred since March 2024 has varied, ranging from 17 to 23 million cubic meters.

Earthquake of magnitude 3.2 in Hamrin

Just before 1 a.m., two earthquakes struck Hamrin on the western edge of Vatnajökull glacier. The first measured 2.5 in magnitude and the second 3.2 in magnitude. Never again a longer eruption pause and great uncertainty about when or if the next eruption will occur
There has been no eruption at the Sundhnúk crater series for over four months, the longest period of time since the beginning of the eruption. Experts believe there is great uncertainty about when and whether another eruption will occur.

There has never been a longer eruption pause since the start of the eruption in the Sundhnúk crater series. Benedikt Ófeigsson, head of deformation measurements at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, says it is uncertain whether there will be another eruption, but it must be expected.

Still magma inflow, although it has slowed down
It has been 126 days since the last eruption at Sundhnúk crater. It has erupted nine times since December 2023.

"We are seeing the same trend we have been watching since the last eruption ended. There is still magma flowing under Svartengi. The seismic activity is not increasing, it is quite low," says Benedikt.

Based on probability calculations, approximately 19 million cubic meters of magma have accumulated under Svartsengi, which is more than what left the magma chamber in the last eruption in mid-July, but less than in the previous eruption in April.

Based on the experience of previous eruptions in the same area, the likelihood of a new magma flow or eruption increases when the same amount of magma has accumulated under Svartsengi as erupted from the chamber in the last one.

Great uncertainty about the future
This summer, it was expected that the magma level would reach its peak in mid-December, but since then the magma inflow has slowed down, so Benedikt believes that it will not be reached until after a few months.

"Over a two-, three-month period, if you look at it, you see that it's slowing down. It's pushing these upper limits. Or a projection of when it's going to reach them, over and over again," says Benedikt.

This also means that there is greater uncertainty, both about when the next eruption will occur and also whether it will occur.

"There is also uncertainty about whether there will be another eruption. It is not certain. But as long as we have an influx, we have to assume it and it is not unlikely that there will be one more, possibly, it just has to be seen," says Benedikt.

"We look back at the Kraflueldi eruptions, people were waiting for many years for an eruption that never came, we could end up having to wait for many months, see an influx but nothing happens, we need to be patient but still assume that there will be another eruption because nothing is ruled out while something is still going on," he adds.

But if the Sundhnúk crater eruptions are over, it must be assumed that the period of activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula is not.

"Given how the Reykjanes Peninsula has behaved in the past, there are some years where there is activity in one system - then there is a break for years or decades and then it goes to the next system. That's what you expect. But then it has to be revealed."

The flow rate continues to decrease – the increase in electrical conductivity could also be due to the 'less dilution'.

A glacier outburst flood ( jökulhlaup ) in Skaftá river is ongoing & the discharge has been stable in ~ 160m³/s. Conductivity is still high & it is more likely that the flood is coming from the West-Skaftárketill cauldron in Vatnajökull glacier that last flooded in autumn 2021
