I'm not sure I can remember much detail, but I'm sure a quick internet search will give you some ideas. Maybe put some stepping stones in for access? If you want to go down the native plant route, Water Mint gives off a lovely scent when you brush past it.

Bog garden? I am particularly fond of plants that like boggy conditions, probably influenced by my time at the water lily nursery which specialised in such things.

If I recall correctly from my RoW days, if a path has been used for a certain number of years then it becomes a RoW. Can't remember how long, but 30 years is in my head.
