The content of this Douthat column aside, this is trash writing. “The Musk America needs…” construction makes it sound like an entity called “The Musk America” needs something. Make it “America needs Musk to be…” Was this shit even edited?

The thing about Trump is that he makes explicit and visible all the corruption that his followers believe (only sometimes correctly) is implicit and invisible. They love this because it confirms how they think the world works, even though the world didn't used to work this way.

The idea that speech and noise are distinct is incorrect and corrosive to good governance of this issue.
