Emerging technologies, industrial decarbonisation & hydrogen enjoyer
You can really tell it's joever for hydrogen as one of the best free newsletters has just been discontinued

Two different values for upstream emissions of natural gas in the same document - RFNBO Delegated Act (emissions methodology). Anyone can tell me what's the difference/which one is right

Brutal decline in climatetech funding since 2021

Wild stat: if you invested in Plug Power 10 years ago you’d be 67% poorer today (nominal)

How did China develop the world's most impressive supply chain? In no small part due to focusing public support on incentivising scale-ups. Contrast with US + EU where public funding tends to focus on R&D. Y axis is % of GDP

A silly lil reel I made of a visit to Arcelor Mittal’s steelworks in Ghent.

The scale was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. First person factorio. Mindblowing how we learned to turn rocks into big ol slabs and coils of steel.

Horizon is Shell's normative scenario of 1.5C by 2100.

Two things struck me about this chart: the amount of waste in hydrogen production, and how little ends up being turned into synthetic jet fuel.

Consider that if we stopped using crop-based biofuels for road transport and instead put them to work in planes, we could decarbonise 25% of aviation by tomorrow.

Chart from Shell's 2025 Energy Security Scenarios.

You should be blackpilling on e-fuels. It's 4x cheaper to abate emissions using biomass CHP + CCS rather than using biomass as a source of biogenic CO2 for e-kerosene. This in recent analysis by Tobias Johan at Danish think tank Concito.

I live for corporate PR merch like children’s PtX stories

UN getting some great advice there.

I’m so tired man

A lot of people are not going to like this one but e-fuels are a hydrogen psyop. FF + DACCS significantly cheaper.

Competition for clean power projects

BloombergNEF recently revised it's green hydrogen cost projections.

$1/kg H2? Forget about it. Already $2/kg is a stretch, even for China and India who don't reach it until 2040.

Worth noting these are average costs tho. There will be exceptional projects that will outperform.

Might have something to do with aviation having some of the worst emissions return on energy invested.

In June 2024 Nikola - the hydrogen truckmaker - did a 30:1 stock split to avoid getting de-listed from the Nasdaq. That did not stop the stock from falling and once again it's only 78 cents from testing the de-listing threshold.

Top 10 binding deals for clean hydrogen offtake add up to only 0.6 megatonnes. Signing MoUs and LOIs is one thing. Getting a term sheet is another.

I can enjoy kikimaxxing, but the Jag is too bricky. Contrast with below.
December 3, 2024 at 1:11 PM
What do you think about the new all electric Jag design? I feel like it's trying too hard to emulate the cybertruck aesthetic and frankly, it's all a bit too kiki for me.

This is funny

Yep checks out

You can witness the lack of standarisation amongst electrolyser system supppliers. Many don't include balance of system elements and then its up the the EPC to figure it out, which is a labour and cost intensive task.
December 4, 2023 at 2:10 PM
To speed up the process, electrolyser mfg capacity is good first step to take advantage of Type 1 learning curves.

But steepest declines will be unlocked by standardisation of system and plant components. We need to create a template for the Green Chemical Plant.
December 4, 2023 at 2:10 PM
So the key takeaway is that electrolyser plant costs are probably going to decline slower and a little less than previously advertised. This is because hydrogen plants are complex feats of engineering due to high safety and redundancy requirements.

It's a chemical plant at the end of the day!
