I'm not an expert, but my instinct is that people are deeply afraid. We sense nature in crisis at a visceral level - extreme weather, pollution, species loss etc. This gets deflected into blaming others for their distress.
And then there are some who deliberately exploit this for power and wealth.

I sometimes wonder if all the polarisation and division arise from a massive denial of the climate crisis. It's too huge to contemplate so let's distract ourselves by fighting instead.
