(7) As the adults in the room, we need to defend them with good choices just as they defend us with their lives.

It is the best way to serve those who choose service.

(6) as there always is, but I want you to remember something else amidst the patriotism: veterans are people. Complex, flawed, beautiful, imperfect people.

When we send troops to do our bidding, remember: these are kids who chose service....

(5) But the heroes behind them? They're people who choose service, for myriad reasons. Most of those reasons have less to do with defending the American way and more to do with trying to make the best choices we can at 17, 18, 19 years old.

(4) We lionize veterans a lot in our culture. We turn them into faceless heroes, risking it all to defend us. It's easy to love people when they're just archetypes. And some of that heroism is legitimate: we choose service, and all it entails. Incredible, selfless choices are made...

(3) In my sister platoon was one of the prettiest girls I'd ever seen. Her ex-boyfriend back home was a bad egg, and she was used as the driver of the getaway car for his robbery. The judge gave her a choice since her record was clean: the military or jail.

She chose service....

(2)...(legal age of consent be damned, we were *kids*) who fell in love with a black boy in her small town. When all the parents found out, both kids were disowned. They were just 18, so they enlisted. They were going through boot camp at the same time.

They chose service....
