I think "curiosity cabinets" rule and more people should just have a display of their weird coins, fossils, gems, etc.

I don't know if this is a time-sensitive issue in the story but atmospheric interference such as a lightning storm can disrupt radio.
If the group can't wait the storm out they'll be forced to visit the tower to do manual repairs.
And repairing a large, metal structure in a storm is very scary.
