Gender Identity Sexuality Alliance (GISA) is a student-led organization dedicated to providing safe, inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ students and allies to connect, share experiences, and support one another. Originally founded to address the social and academic challenges that queer students often face. GISA chapters have grown into empowering spaces where diversity is celebrated and student voices are amplified. For queer students, having a supportive community can be essential to wellbeing. Studies reveal that LGBTQ+ youth experience higher rates of mental illness largely due to isolation and discrimination. According to a 2022 GLSEN survey, over 60% of queer students report feeling unsafe due to their sexual orientation or gender identity, and nearly half have experienced bullying or harassment these experiences contribute to higher levels of depression and anxiety among LGBTQ+ youth compared to their non-LGBTQ+ peers. (GLSEN 2022) However, research also shows that being a part of a supportive group like GISA can significantly improve the mental health, academic performance, and self-esteem of queer students. The Trevor project National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental health (2023) found that LGBTQ+ youth who felt a strong sense of community and support at school were nearly 30% less likely to experience depressive symptoms and 50% less likely to attempt suicide (The Trevor Project 2023) This Evidence underscores why spaces like GISA are so important they provide a sense of belonging and a source of resilience for LGBTQ+ students. Here at mesa Community College's Red Mountain campus, we started our own GISA Club to give LGBTQ students and allies a chance to find community and build strong connections with each other, red mountain is a smaller and more tight-knit than the main campus on southern and dobson, so we just wanted to create a club that has a lot to offer, we wanted a space right here on our own campus where people could form genuine friendships, access support and feel at home. At GISA Red Mountain, we host events that celebrate LGBTQ+ culture, dive into discussions about our histories and issues, and just give everyone a place to feel comfortable and be themselves. It's a place where we get to learn, share, and grow together. Whether we're putting on events sharing resources or just hanging out, we want every LGBT+ student and ally at Red Mountain to feel know they've got a place here.
