salvageable yes! there are lots of other problems still but I dont think I've been so mad about a film's last five minutes in a long time

perhaps most disturbing to me is their lack of engagement with art. I ask them if they've seen any good movies lately and get nothing. I have had students tell me they've never seen live music, never been to a show. of course there are exceptions, but this being the generalized tendency is horrific.

I'd love to be wrong. perhaps in this ferment new forms of understanding, new motivating ideals, and new kinds of collective action are crystallizing. but I do not believe that opressive domination must generate active or effective resistance. and more than anything, looking around, I'm just scared.

almost all my teacher friends and colleagues are reporting something similar. this isn't a natural generational nihilism, but one that has been actively inculcated in them as the desired aim of a decades-long political project. their illiteracy and hopelessness is an achieved goal. it's terrifying.

I find myself trying to give them a grammar and concepts with which to express what is dysfunctional about our social order and its effects on our lives and they look at me like I am an alien. they don't seem to know they can demand things be better, or worse and not unreasonably see that as futile.
