Plus, his putting stats were inexplicable. 123 total putts—tied for 6th most by any major champion last 30 years—when he was only 9th in GIR (last 4 Oakmont Open champs had been 1-1-3-1.) Yet, he led field Putting inside 5 feet (52/52), Putting inside 10 feet (60/64), and Feet of Putts Made (402).

But J.J. Spaun’s turnaround mid-round (and others’ downward turns) was beyond belief. 40-32. That 8-stroke improvement was the largest ever by a U.S. Open champion in the final round. And a champion hadn’t even began his final round by going out in 40 or more since Francis Ouimet in 1913.
