Unfortunately, in US journalism it is considered neutral to spread a lie, but it is considered "biased" to call out a lie. So, there is a structural asymmetry that rewards colorful lies with virality.

Further explanation of the above, from someone who votes in every TX election: Inaccurate references to “registered Democrats” etc just mean the number who walk up on primary Election Day (not the general) and ask for a ballot with Dem or GOP candidates. Never applies to general elections.

Texas resident here. This is absolutely correct. No such thing as “registered Democrat” or “registered Republican” in TX.
