Seriously tho, this is a well-reported piece that make it hard not to conclude that Patel is using government resources to enjoy the trappings of a mid-level celebrity, like hosting his buddies for a golf retreat in Scotland.

In late August, Mr. Patel flew on a government jet from the Washington area to an airport in Inverness, Scotland. The destination was an exclusive golf resort, the Carnegie Club, for a getaway with friends, including former Navy SEALs , along with people he had met as a public defender and in travels overseas earlier in his career. Ms. Wilkins did not attend. On-the-ground preparations were extensive and expensive. F.B.I. agents coordinated Mr. Patel’s transportation and security arrangements with the Scottish and British authorities. This entailed deploying an advance team and round-the-clock security personnel known as “ravens” to guard Mr. Patel’s plane, according to a former U.S. official with direct knowledge of the matter.

Anyway, it seems clear that Rubio briefed a bipartisan group of senators that he wasn't involved in the plan, and then got in trouble when they told the press that, so now he says the US authored the plan and he knew about it all along
