Remember reading an interview way back when with the dude behind del.icio.us where he advocated for social websites to "gracefully degrade" I think the phrase was, where relevant data was minimal, "1 of your followers liked this" etc.

But I don't believe either austerity or Brexit were regarded as good ideas by mainstream economists (to name just two of the "how've we ended up here?" contributing factors)
