This house is a gem but there must be something wrong if it’s now $259k. Hope it finds the right owner. www.zillow.com/homedetails/...

The actual story is that a family of American citizens trying to evacuate from a neighborhood that ICE had made unsafe, and then ICE tossed munitions into the car, causing three kids to be hospitalized and a six month old to stop breathing. DHS called the family “radical agitators”

(Note that the bakery is in East Longmeadow, not Fall River. It’s just being reported in a Fall River paper.)

If we still have US history textbooks in 50 years, I hope this is in them.

Failing that, whatever country or civilization emerges out of our ruins hopefully can include this image in the narrative about our decline and fall.

Congratulations to Mount Holyoke College in their efforts to go NetZero. Perfect case study is this house, until this past November a nice Greek Revival house, which their contractors have stripped to the frame and covered in petroleum-based products: PFT insulation, vinyl windows, and vinyl siding.

You can’t have something like this unless you have robust public transportation in place in the entire state, which of course we don’t. Worcester to Boston by train takes 1.5 hours. Pittsfield to Boston takes 4 hours and there’s one train per day. www.nbcboston.com/news/local/n...

These facile takes are tiresome. People knew Trump would follow the authoritarian playbook to try to entrench his power, including what’s happening now in MN, where there’s now a Catch-22 when it comes to responding strongly. Dems knew this and ran bad campaigns anyway. They share responsibility.

Anyone in the US outside of MA: is this happening at an accelerated rate where you are? If not I wonder if this is due to new (and misguided, in some respects) energy-efficiency incentives offered by the state for homeowners. Not sure I have enough followers to get much insight, but I’m curious.
Every goddamned day I come across these before/after images of wonderful houses that recently have been wrecked. We’re going to have nothing left in 20 years.

This one, until last year a high-style Federal house, is in Weymouth, MA

Passed by the site of the Atwater mansion in Westfield, MA and saw that it has finally been demolished for a new police station. What a travesty. The city’s historical commission didnt even try to save it. What else are they doing? www.masslive.com/westfieldnew...

On this day 250 years ago, Henry Knox and his “noble train of artillery” crossed into Massachusetts. Knox would reach Cambridge on January 18 and the artillery a week later. Went to a reenactment on the NY-MA border this morning to commemorate it.

Does anything good ever happen to old houses anymore? I saw the HH Richardson house this morning and then driving through Amherst, MA I see that my favorite Federal-style house has just been wrecked. Here are before/after pics.

Welp, as feared Henry Hobson Richardson’s house in Brookline has been totally ruined by a contractor. First time I’ve seen interior photos and nothing’s left. It was essentially intact to his lifetime until a few years ago. www.redfin.com/MA/Brookline...

When did it become common for old cemetery aficionados to think that the only important people buried in cemeteries are war veterans? It’s almost ubiquitous nowadays.

This is what historic preservation should look like: 88 new units of affordable housing in old mill buildings that still use the canal’s hydropower system for electricity. It was nice to play a (very) small role in this project www.westernmassnews.com/2026/01/07/t...

Learned that the owner of Asher Benjamin’s 1797 Coleman-Hollister house in Greenfield, MA is retiring (it’s a funeral home) and selling it soon.

One of the most important Federal houses in the country. Still intact.

It has zero protections.

All the Kennedy vaccine shit is insane, but no longer recommending the meningitis vaccine for kids is especially insane. And the RSV vaccine is one of the main reasons why far fewer kids have had to go to the emergency department the past couple years.

If we’d carried on with the green energy transition we wouldn’t need new sources of oil nor spend hundreds of billions to get it. Oh well.
