Picking on the coolest FBI jacket is important and time-consuming. I'm not at all surprised that he didn't know that the shooter was apprehended on the spot, and was hoping for a “The Fugitive” moment (only he caught the guy) to make himself feel like less of an imposter than we all know he is.
