I like to overlay a grid on top of the reference I want and then have a similarly proportioned grid on my canvas to try to approximate it (:
The grid doesn't show on the timelapse but I also used it for this one!

There was one time I started with the ass LOL I feel like that takes more confidence :3

But for this one specifically it helped that the client asked me to just recreate a previous pose I had done 🦊

The last couple years of my art have been a lot about applying "less is more" and it has worked for a lot of things but hair is one area that I feel lags behind

If you want something even more concrete, try to avoid adding a highlight or shadow in the same hue as the base colour.

The best advice I think I can give is to find someone whose style you like and try to recreate that. I've heard finding comfortable brushes is also a huge help but idk about that because I haven't found mine yet lmao.
