There is no reason the ATproto signup experience needs to be overwhelming and overly technical. Especially because the different PDS Hosters are functionally the same from a user perspective.

A simple "pick any provider. You can use every ATproto app with it" might already make it much easier

You can argue the same about the evil oauth scope consent screens if you log in with Google and I don't see that those are a problem

Mastodon is a very different experience than Bluesky and I don't think they can be compared in that regard. If you pick the wrong instance instance on the fediverse you will have a very bad time. It matters much less in the Atmosphere bc everything is public by default.

Btw, have you seen how easy and nice you can make the signup flow? This is from @margin.at

Not only is it easy and looks nice but it also teaches a new user that there are different providers and that you can self host if you want

Sign in should be frictionless. Sign up should have some friction imo. The choice of PDS host is important and even if some or even most won't care that much about it, it is an important part of the Atmosphere and people should be taught why

You also need to consider that you only need to sign up once. Then never again.
That is already a much better user experience than having to create a new account for every service you use.

Every other, non-atproto service hosts user data because they have no other choice.

ATproto is great because you can use one account for a gazillion apps. This is basically "log in with Facebook" on steroids.

It should be easy to sign up, yes. But not every app needs to deal with it.

I was thinking about getting a new GPU soon and wasn't sure if I should go for AMD or Nvidia. I knew that Nvidia was kinda bad on Linux but I didn't know how bad

1. Everybody uses different types
2. Common types gets established
3. Common.type.v2 gets released
4. People struggle to migrate their data bc not all their tools are compatible
5. Data gets duplicated across several versions
6. Trash data in PDSs
7. PDS cleaner tools

Yeah absolutely. It's always a good thing to document decisions and revisit them if needed. What I want to avoid are pointless discussions about opinions. If there are two valid ways to do something just pick something and go with it.

The older I get the more I think that it's way more important to make a decision and stick with it than making the "right" decision in the first place. Especially if it's about less important stuff

This post gave me the impulse to set up my own PDS
