Part-time Solo Dev

I make lil games while I chip away at Glyphscape, a retro RPG and my main project.

Finally figured something out that's been nagging me for a long time-- applying post-processing effects to single layers of the ASCII sprites in #Glyphscape. The top layer is already designated for particle effects, so adding bloom to that layer only adds a nice pop.

Another #screenshotsaturday post while I'm at it: overhauled the Region Info UI which was sorely lacking before.

The region is shown in an expanded 3x3 grid of features (roads, rivers, points of interest).

On the right is a season/time-of-day dial and below is a weather readout and region name.

Did some much needed tweaks to how walls are displayed and the result is oh so satisfying. Now actually seems to give the proper perspective illusion I'm going for.

Updated the Turn Order UI for #Glyphscape. Previously, each Monster/Action had its own entry in the table. Hard to parse, and not very pretty.

The new UI gives each monster one slot, and reports their current resources only. Also, it's much prettier now.

Forgot bluesky has a complicated relationship with gifs. Here's the clip!

Took a pass at polishing up the arcade racer I made last year. I feel like this clip captures the game feel of #RatRace quite nicely. You can play right now on itch!

If anybody needed a visual representation for why game jams are good, here is my github activity for the past four months, leading up to a 3-week jam.

Returning to #Glyphscape after a break to practice finishing games. Got tired of painting the world so I worked on some visual enhancements instead. Flipping levers and raising bridges from the water now have animations!

Finally got a trailer finished for #Glyphscape!

Now to actually finish the main story!

After getting accustomed to one or two views a day on itch, it's great to see the visibility that PERCEPTO has gotten.

Despite being up for less than 2 days, it already accounts for 1/5 of all activity on my games.

The results are in! Ranking 108 out of 853 games for the Fun Factor feels nice. My only regret is that I did not upload an in-browser version during the jam (it's up now though 👀👀)

Finally figured out the workflow for rigging and applying animations to 3D models in #Godot. A spooky dance number was the logical next step.

Finally added diagonal movement to #Glyphscape. I have no idea why it took me this long to implement but I am glad I did.

Almost missed #screenshotsaturday! Showing off the player character reflection effect from shallow water. Who needs ray tracing when you can just :) -> (:

Another not-gamedev post. This time a landscape inspired by #Dune that I painted while snowed-in at an Airbnb last year.

In honor of Half-Life 2's 20th anniversary, I printed and painted a headcrab (AAA battery for scale)

I've been working on Glyphscape's inventory system. Namely, creating ASCII art for the various weapons you can find.

I remember these wise words
November 20, 2024 at 5:30 PM
I realized I have so far failed to post anything anything about #Glyphscape, my longest-running project. It is a turn-based RPG with a somewhat soulslike game loop, and is drawn entirely from layered ASCII text.

The other meeples did not get nearly as much attention to detail, but still took most of the time spent on the effort. (not pictured are the legion of 100 or so identical warriors)

When I'm not working on my gamedev projects, I dabble in miniature painting. These vagabonds from #Root were some of my first, before I learned to thin my paints.

Here's a quick preview of the weekend project that I am currently finishing up. It is a clone of #Skyjo, one of my favorite casual card games.

I should be done with the most basic version this week, and I plan to use this project to figure out online multiplayer in subsequent versions.
November 20, 2024 at 1:17 AM
One day I might try to port the project over to #Godot because I'm a sucker for a good sunk-cost fallacy, and I wouldn't want these musty sewer vibes to go to waste.
