I played around with Irish chain-like designs for so long recently (see Sunday sketches #497 to #500 and sorta #501) that I think nine-patches are still at the very forefront of my brain. The basic block in this week's sketch features a nine-patch with a few add-ons.

Heading off in a new direction with this week's sketch! It's loosely related to some other stuff I'll post in the coming weeks, but for now I'm considering it a standalone design. It's kinda kooky, but fun.

This week's sketch is the last in a series of Irish chain-inspired designs. But I've tweaked the design so much that it's hard to see any Irish chain-iness left 🙂

Believe it or not, I'm still working through a bunch of Irish chain-inspired designs. (Also, believe it or not, I've made it to 500 Sunday sketches – woo hoo!!)

I'm continuing my series of Irish chain-inspired designs this week. You might be able to see how this sketch incorporates elements of that traditional quilt design while also straying from it a little bit.

More Irish-chain-inspired fun this week!

Some wriggly, squiggly fun to start off 2026 – Happy New Year!

In the midst of writing last week's blog post, I realised I could tweak that design just a little bit more. You can probably see the similarities – I'm still following a floral theme 🙂 – but I figured this new version's different enough to be worth sharing.

This week's sketch reminds me of poinsettias, which are always popular around Christmas, so it seemed appropriate to post it today!

I'll never pass up a chance to create a flowery design! This week's sketch uses the same underlying design as Sunday sketches #492 and #493 but is coloured differently to give the impression of big bright flowers.

This week's sketch is closely related to last week's. Well, the underlying design is exactly the same – but I've changed the orientation, the colour placement, and the palette. I think of changes like that as cosmetic rather than structural, as they wouldn't affect how you'd…

A few weeks ago, I shared a block-based design featuring alternating blocks that used straight lines and curves in complementary ways. I'm revisiting that concept this week, using some chunky shapes from a while back.

A while back, Tara Glastonbury of Stitch & Yarn invited me to contribute Moonshot to her next quilt exhibition, called 'Ahead of the Curve'. I'm always thrilled to be invited to participate in any of Tara's exhibitions, so of course I said yes! Then more recently, she asked if…

I made a quilt recently (which I'll share in a few weeks' time) that used loads of wide curves – the same size/shape that I used in my quilts Blue Wave, Whirlwind and Quattro. Basically a 7" (finished) drunkard's path unit with a 3.5" (finished) drunkard's path cut out of it. A…

More sawtooth stars this week, since I'm building on last week's sketch. It's essentially the same underlying design, just coloured differently. Let me show you how I got here from there!

Would you believe that I designed this week's sketch and drafted this blog post almost two weeks ago, and only realised last Wednesday that the basic design is the same as Sunday sketch #440 (posted last December)?! I always knew it would happen eventually... I've copied myself!…

One of the quilts I'm making at the moment combines traditional quilt blocks (nine patches and rail-fence sashing blocks) with circles. It's a funny mix of old and new, prints and solids... it's a way to use up fabric from my stash while trying out a new design approach. At the…

I don't usually do holiday-themed designs, but I couldn't help it this week. The basic flower unit in last week's sketch reminded me of a pumpkin, and with Halloween coming up... it felt like good timing to play around with the idea a little more.

I always seem to have one or two unrealised ideas in my head when it comes to quilt designing – vague concepts or hazy pictures that float around my brain but won't quite land on paper (or screen). One of these ideas is for an Australian native plants/flowers quilt – I'm…

A few weeks ago, I shared a sketch featuring stripy blocks that were subcut into triangle-in-a-square units. Depending on the colour palette and placement, the design could look like larger transparent shapes had been placed over a checkerboard of stripes. I'd also tried the…

Some groovy retro shapes this week, to cleanse your palate (and palette!) after a few weeks of mostly traditional designs.

Like Sunday sketches #481 and #482, this week's sketch is a block-based design featuring one main motif: a two-layer economy block surrounded on all four sides by a small square on point. The small squares are shared between adjacent blocks, and there's potential to change…

It's not too hard to see the common element in this week's and last week's sketches: that dark double-layer economy block with smaller angled squares on its top, bottom and sides. Now there are just more of them!

It's been a minute since I shared a series of related sketches. This week's (and at least the next two weeks') sketches feature a recurring motif that I've been calling (in my head) the 'robot'. Even though it doesn't really look anything like a robot.
