Founded in 1928, the Department of Geography at Durham University is one of the leading centres of geographical research and education in the world.
We have some alumni careers talks for students coming up on January 29th. Our graduate prospects are currently the highest of any UK Geography Department and our students are highly employable. This is a great chance to hear from our graduates now working in successful careers across many sectors.

Professor Hannah Cloke OBE is an internationally recognised hydrologist specialising in floods, climate extremes, and disaster risk reduction. She works with news media and the entertainment industry on climate, water and environmental issues.

The Geographical Magazine of the RGS-IBG has just published a supplement on choosing University Geography courses. Two of the five 'case study' students are from Durham - Mia Yearwood and Cameron Powell. They provide some valuable insights on what its like to study on our BA and BSc programmes.

Our Department has been ranked #1 for Geography and Environmental Science in the Times Higher and Sunday Times rankings for 2026. This includes the highest scores for research and teaching quality (68.8 and 90.9 respectively) and a score of 94.4 for graduate prospects.

Zippy Kariuki, a student on our MA Climate, Risk & Society programme, took part in the Commonwealth Scholars Parliamentary Reception, discussing climate change & heritage with MPs and Lords. Zippy asked how policymakers can better include community voices & indigenous knowledge in climate debates.

Congratulations to Durham Geography alumni David Shukman on his award of an Honorary Doctorate yesterday. David began a Geography degree at Durham in 1977 and went on to become a leading journalist and the BBC News Science Editor. Many congratulations David from all @geogdurham.bsky.social

Last week the Department hosted Dr. Jennifer Walker, Assistant Professor at Rowan University and a specialist in climate change and coastal environments. During the week Jennifer gave a research seminar, met with a variety of staff and took part in a modelling group and a reading workshop.

WE student John’s thought of the day: Yesterday I learned about tracing meltwater contaminants through glaciers and the implications of this for water insecurity and our research into a range of geopolitical issues from migration open borders and inequality to national identity and climate change.
