“The junk merchant doesn't sell his product to the consumer, he sells the consumer to his product. He does not improve and simplify his merchandise. He degrades and simplifies the client.”

Agreed, but mediocrity is a fuzzy target. A lot of Australia's problems lie from a pretentious fixation on excellence over competence (too many Nth tier unis, too little TAFE).

When Australians complain about mediocrity, I think of this quote from the excellent book Straight Man (Richard Russo).

badgers > beavers > claude code, as I predicted in 2008 at Sensory Networks (sadly management disappeared my little art installation almost immediately, the bastards):

I regret to inform you that it is an actual quote from the movie.

The character is played with unblinking, po-faced stupidity by Sarah Michelle Gellar and definitely one of the funnier parts of it, along with an equally funny and intentionally dim performance from Dwayne Johnson.

So if you want to start training Muay Thai, I recommend going to a place with an excellent dog (Tupac!) and excellent merch and even better excellent merch *of* the dog:

Ugh, I should try this, but I have a near-Balzac level of coffee addiction. The only time I ever tried it I expected some sort of amazing well-being increment to match the awful withdrawal headaches. Said increment never happened.

Anyhow, now isn't the time. :-)

Also, the complete lack of historical awareness is funny. Every Commodore 64 game in Australia in 1983 was list price $A40 in 1983 dollars, equivalent to $A157 today ($US102), including such wonders as Tooth Invaders.

err, ok

Wages have in fact grown at about the same rate as game prices, in Australia at least. The difference between the share of weekly earnings to buy Tooth Invaders in 1984 (pictured below in all its magnificence) and Elden Ring in 2024 isn't that big.

Congratulations, you (pictured below) are the first person to have ever realised that this policy might cost money and have to be funded somehow. Maybe after he sees your insightful query, Adam Bandt will go to the Parliamentary Budget Office and get costings for "Putting dental care into Medicare".

So, I've found an even more irritating t-shirt than my previous one (a giant picture of Owen Wilson labelled NIRVANA):

An amazing artefact: a Wonder Woman comic, somehow involving Fritz Leiber's beloved swords and sorcery characters Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, and written by none other than Samuel Delany. Not a comics guy, but I couldn't resist.

Imagine thinking this was an interesting debate to have in the Year of our Lord 2024. Formal methods or SMTLIB2 discussions attract like 5 people, but the minute we're in debugger vs. printf or tabs vs spaces, all the "expert programmers" emerge.
