Tea, toast, a few interlibrary loans. Trying to relax after this terrible week and anticipating a busy weekend.

I am trying to plan some family vacations this year in an effort to have something to look forward to - I hope the Blue Jays have another great year for REASONS.

Just started reading Shilt's And the Band Played On. I know the characterization of Patient Zero is wrong (I like to think Shilts would have been interested in the later studies about it if he had lived), but an incredibly interesting read and a way to re-contextualize my childhood in many ways.

I have played a lot of Tiny Bookshop in the last 24 hours, but I am a little too stressed about bad recommendations, so probably need to take a break.

This is not revolutionary or anything but I miss mass market paperbacks. When I was a kid, it was reasonable for me to buy one with my allowance money (agonizing over which Star Trek novel to pick was the best) and it made impulse book buying easier when I was older.

The Rainbow Connection, by Kermit the Frog - every time.
Are there any songs that make you cry any time you hear em?

post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam, or alice in chains.

Got Maangchi's Big Book of Korean Cooking and Sami Tamimi and Yotam Ottolenghi's Jerusalem cookbooks for Christmas. Last year I got Jon Kung's Kung Food and I just made something from Illyanna Maisonet's Diasporican. I love cookbooks that reflect on the diaspora as evidenced by food.

The kid made me watch all 3 new episodes of Stranger Things last night. Not going to spoil anything for anyone, but am surprised by the recurrent appearance of Murray. The conspiracy theorist/abrasive crackpot trope is best used sparingly, for me. Eg. early X-Files used the Lone Gunmen just enough.

I got 4 records for Christmas: Norah Jones' Come Away with Me, the Garden State soundtrack, Metric's Greatest Hits Vol. 2 and Tame Impala's Currents. Other records include Horse Jumpr of Love, the Jackie Brown soundtrack, Ronnie Scott, and John Taylor for other music lovers. Sounds good in here.

Just watched When Harry Met Sally with the kids and the girl said "Harry can't talk to Sally like that, she is a generational baddie" and she was right to say it.

My last gift came in the mail today, my Secret Santa gift arrived yesterday and was PERFECT, I am going to make a flan for tomorrow night's dinner, everyone is warm and healthy in my house, going to watch When Harry met Sally and eat charcuterie tonight. There is a lot to be grateful for, this day.

Have none of these people read The Stand or Station Eleven?
I get that the Denver airport has a reputation for being creepy, but it's not supposed to be in this specific way.

Listening to Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Sessions, a used record I got from High Notes Coffee + Vinyl in Toronto. Melancholy and sweet, suits my mood maybe.

This has been a hard week in a hard year but I am going to watch a movie with my family tonight and it will be nice to snuggle under some blankets and eat some chips and dip.

Still jarring to see Mrs. McMurray as a Star Fleet captain. Keep expecting her to sling a gin and tonic around and make advances on the whole medbay staff.

Alt: A man with a beard is wearing overalls and a hat while sitting in a field. A character named Squirrel Dan from the Canadian television series Letterkenny; he is saying "allegedly."

Went to pick up my last interlibrary loans of the year and Octavia Butler's Lilith's Brood was in there. I started it while the oldest was getting his eyes checked and pretty sure this book is going to eat up my next few days.

Going to get all the Christmas stuff mailed out today; I think the Christmas shopping for this house's residents is done; got many chores and much socializing done. That will be a satisfying to do list review this evening and I will reward myself by watching Alien: Earth with the children tonight.

On my second play through of BG3 I have accidentally made it impossible to recruit Karlach and I have deleted all my saves prior to the turning point. I guess we will see how this goes without her.

I have fallen a bit behind with the Bonne Maman jams - I will save the caramels (salted and coffee) for the weekend but I did try the White Nectarine and Peaches with Lemon Verbena. Grassy/herby forward, for me, with the stonefruit a bit behind. Not a universal favorite in the house, but I liked it.

Two new Bonne Maman flavours - Apple Caramel Cinnamon and Apricot with Lavender. Despite family doubts ahead of time, we all really enjoyed the Apricot with Lavender. The Apple Caramel Cinnamon was fine. I liked the earlier Cherry with Violet Leaves better on it's own rather than with toast.
