Sent my sisters care packages from Hawaii, and slipped in my TV remote just to keep them on their toes.

Snagged this US Army radio box at an auction for $3.73. Considering making it into some kind of DIY synth.

Suggestions / recommendations? 🙏

I will need to contact the fellow (named Guy) in the UK who has manufactured a replacement flexible PCB. The new jobbies cost $200+ USD and solve many of the known issues for which these older, brittle, OG pieces have become infamous. Might as well replace rubber contacts while at it.
April 14, 2025 at 2:57 PM
However, when everything was set into the case and plugged back in, it immediately become apparent that the flexible PCB had issues. Most keys did not work, unless I firmly pressed on the plastic retaining strip pictured. This spot is infamous for failing.

Amplifiedparts.com is the contact for the Korg / Yamaha felt. $6 for a spool. It is adhesive-backed and covers the entire length of the aftertouch strip (with about a foot as spare).
April 14, 2025 at 2:38 PM
After the felt task completed, I reset the keys into their respective slots. There is a certain way they all snap into place that requires a small learning curve, but it was a painless task.
April 14, 2025 at 2:33 PM
After some research on forums, I encountered a tip from someone who had (thru trial and error) found that using a Korg / Yamaha felt strip worked best, so I decided to follow their advice (since the OG is no longer available). The shipping to Hawaii was nearly three times the cost, but it worked.

The next step will involve replacing felt material upon which each key sets. (It was removed, because it had soaked up glue.) This felt is crucial in how it interplays with an aftertouch strip (seen in this picture south of the magenta felt).

Next step: resetting metal key springs.

I ensured each spring was cleaned of red glue, wiping infected ones down with acetone, then finishing with a brake-cleaner bath. After this,I reapplied white lithium grease in the spring stays.
April 5, 2025 at 1:03 AM
I then reset the key bed w/ its rubber contacts.

To first remove, I broke the end of a toothpick and rounded it down, then aided the nipple from its stay using it; to reset the rubber contacts, that same toothpick was used to gently insert the nipple thru the respective holes w/ slight pressure.
April 5, 2025 at 12:50 AM
Next step: cleaning up any red glue that had found its way into spots inside the case. I used toothpicks to scrape the bulk out, then cotton swabs and qtips soaked in 100% acetone, whilst wearing nitrile gloves.

A dab of silicon will do ya! It appears to be a suitable means to affix these weights in the black keys, as well.

I need to weigh one weight, so that I can use fishing weights to replace the weight lost during cleaning. Here’s what that weight looks like. Might try and make a mold for it.
April 3, 2025 at 11:32 PM
It appears silicon will suffice. Here are the white keys completed. ☑️
April 3, 2025 at 11:05 PM
Using clear, 100% silicon to secure key weights, as it seems less permanent than using something like JB Weld (thus easier to redo in the future should something problematic surface). This is a test run of the first six keys to see how the materials interact.

Acetone wipe-down on the underlying flexible PCB completed, using cotton swabs and qtips. Also removed rubber contacts and cleaned them. Might need to order a new set of both of these, but will check all this out after re-assembling.
