We also want to be very clear: Under Minnesota law, gender-affirming care remains legal and protected at this time. We stand firmly in solidarity with Minnesota and North Dakota providers, families, and patients and will continue to fight to defend access to proven and often lifesaving medical care.

We are horrified by this despicable plan targeting trans and non-binary youth, which is also part of a larger political strategy designed to undermine bodily autonomy and erode trust in medical science.

It’s long past time to fix what’s broken. That’s why we’ve filed a lawsuit on behalf of S.R., demanding reforms that will live up to our values — and Minnesota law — by ensuring every young person is protected and treated with the respect they deserve.

Making Foster Care Safe for Trans Youth
Protecting Minnesota transgender youth’s right to safety, including in the foster care system.

S.R. had the support of her family, but many trans youth enter foster care because they’ve been rejected by theirs. But instead of finding safety, these kids can face yet another wave of harm from the very system that was supposed to be a sanctuary.

S.R.’s story isn’t just infuriating, it also points to deep, systemic failures. Trans, non-binary, and LGBQ+ youth are overrepresented in foster care — nearly ⅓ of Minnesota Fosters identify as LGBTQ2S+. These kids also face higher rates of violence, mental health challenges, and discrimination.

The system that was supposed to protect her became a nightmare. S.R. faced relentless physical and psychological abuse, much of it specifically targeting her as a trans young person. & when she and her family asked for help, their requests were dismissed or dangled as rewards for “good behavior.”

We continue to call for systemic reforms to reduce incarceration and address fundamental inequities in our criminal justice system. Still, we are grateful to see tangible movement toward ensuring that people who are in custody are treated with dignity and respect.

That looks like:

-Honoring folks’ gender identity when determining their housing assignment.
-Requiring regular training for jail staff.
-Making good faith efforts to use the correct names, pronouns, and honorifics of all people in custody.

After our client was subjected to misgendering and invasive questioning at the Hennepin County Jail, we fought alongside him to demand justice and meaningful change.

We’re resolved to continue standing with our client, a beloved school librarian who lost her job due to anti-trans discrimination from her employer. And we’re determined to keep fighting to make sure the law protects everyone, no matter who they are or where they work.

We’re also excited to announce a match from gender justice champions Kit and Heather Johnson, doubling the first $5,000 we receive!

Thank you for being with us today, tomorrow on Give to the Max Day, and every day 💚
