This collaboration w/ Federico came about after we met at the 2022 PhD School on Elections in Leuven. Not only did we have a great time at the summer school – it also ended in a friendship, collaboration and now a joint publication! 😊

2️⃣ In combination w/ corresponding attitudes questions, it allows comparing predictors of issue salience and attitudes. People act upon their attitudes towards an issue when they consider the issue important. We need data on both - salience & attitudes - to explain political behavior.

1️⃣ This allows comparing who finds which issues more/less important across all respondents and many issues. It allows assessing the salience of issues that often do not make it to the top 3 important issues, e.g. gender equality. (I would have loved to have this data for my PhD)

We demonstrate the value of closed-ended issue-specific survey questions capturing issue salience. Instead of asking the most-important-issue-question, surveys may ask “how important do you consider X?", providing a list of issues & closed-ended answer scales for each issue. Two advantages: ⬇️

We find that different sociodemographic variables affect different issues’ salience across and within individuals over time. We also find that predictors of individual-level issue salience and attitudes often differ – highlighting the importance of analysing them separately.
