Before that happens, I wanted to say a few words about Laura and its reception - first of all thank you so so much to those who've gotten the comic and especially if you took the time to let me know you liked it. It means a lot to me. I first read Carmilla five years ago (on the date, I remember reading it on the month of October) and became obsessed with its ending. In a way, Laura has been existing in my brain since the moment I first put down the book. To have the opportunity to bring it to life and for people to read it and say it's the perfect sequel to the novella had me floored in the best way. I'm really glad so many of you thought so! Special thanks also to those unfamiliar with the book who gave my comic a chance, there were also many of you and I'm glad to know the comic holds up on its own. Overall I'm really proud of it, it's one of those projects that you simply must make in your lifetime and I'm incredibly grateful for the readers and to the fair for giving Laura the opportunity to be read by so many.

question: I loved Laura! Thank you for sharing your hard work with us. I don’t think this spoils anything, so could I ask what you think Laura’s relationship with her father was like after the events of Carmilla? answer: Thank you so much for reading!! I haven't given it much thought but if I had to think about it on the fly - the original novella depicts their relationship as overall loving, with Laura's father often spoiling her and shielding her from the world at large. It is of course a fictional relationship seen through the lens of a man who lived in the late 19th century so it comes with all that entails, including the same flavor of how the novel depicts Laura as this demure, often clueless and passive protagonist, which is what drove me to make this comic in the first place. I wanted to explore her internality and what everything that happened in the novella would have done to a lesbian who is closeted even to herself. Sorry I think I got away from your question. I think their relationship kept on being loving, though spoiled by her father being overprotective, even more so after the events of the book, which might've contribuited to Laura's repression and (gestures at everything happening in the comic).

We are midway through the shortbox comic fair, clock's ticking!

I've talked about it before but I thought I'd share Laura's inspirations again. The minor ones are less direct and more vibe based, I was watching a lot of sh2 and listening to a bunch of cain while working on the comic 🩸
inspirations for my shortbox comics fair comic, "laura". Major inspirations: a guest in the house by em carroll, we have always lived in the castle by shirley jackson, the yellow wallpaper by charlotte perkins gilman, and twilight new moon by stephenie meyer.
