it starts to feel more like communication if you compare chairs -- you get to see what aspects the designer emphasizes vs other designers' chairs or over their previous designs. a lot of the narrative of Metroid is implied via the way the games differ from each other

again, you're allowed to have a preference, but i reject the idea it's more "real", especially when those other aspects are so clearly intentional and consonate with the experience of play. the thematic elements in Metroid don't cheapen it for me, they enhance.

you don't think communication includes feelings or moods? to be clear, my "communication" includes things that are inarticulable though language. art exists because it can communicate things you can't communicate through language alone.

from my perspective all these things are tools the designer uses to communicate something, and what's most important is context and audience sensitive. you can connect with one aspect more but i'll have a hard time being convinced one is more "real" than the other

this is also not my experience as a musician fwiw!! sometimes those other aspects are MORE fundamental than the chord. it all depends on it's intended function in the song.

Metroid 2 you fight the same boss dozens of times -- at first they're intimidating/difficult but it quickly becomes rote. Fusion's x virus enemies require you to run into them to collect them or they'll spread immediately and they hit way harder than enemies in other entries.

the motivation of Samus is real because it's pretty explicitly communicated both through text in later iterations and in gameplay. like what you DO in 2 & Fusion feels very different than 1

you've arbitrarily decided that mechanics are more real than other ways creators can communicate with players. i also think you're using a different standard for games than other media, unless you don't think about motivation in books, movies, a painting, etc

i'm not even convinced i could remake my own games without accidentally undermining something -- there's so much deep contextual thinking happening when creating games and i'm not sure how i would get back into that mindspace even a few years post-release.

the former feels in line with the overall vision of the game and the latter doesn't. actually most remasters/remakes bother me -- they lack the original context of the game's development and even ostensibly benign changes end up clashing or feeling out of place.

i actually think this approach is fine but the one criticism i would have is that i had NO IDEA the codex had multiple tabs of information because the "ENEMIES" header doesn't look like a button, nor are there any UI elements that hint at different tabs there. someone had to explicitly tell me.

when a human solves a problem, they start to build a mental model of that problem and can eventually come up with a context-aware solution given enough examples. AI will happily solve the same problem over and over and over again in the same way because AI is not capable of asking "why".

zoom ceo's vision of the future is AI getting on zoom calls for him, but like, what if we just got rid of pointless zoom calls to begin with? i'm not saying there are no applications where it reduces work, i'm saying it very often gets over-applied as a bandaid without tackling the real problem

there are tons of news sites with slop content because they cost less to produce than the ad revenue they pull in, even if that ad revenue is small. it only has to fool a few people to exist when the barrier of entry is so low. when the cost bar goes low enough, it is NOT self-resolving

it might help if you tried to understand the nuance of an argument rather than reducing it to a self-contradictory statement.
have you considered that "reduce friction" and "making stuff better" aren't synonyms? that local maxima exist? that acute treatment is often not a cure?

ok, i think we're largely on the same page, then. i don't think we should actively extol the virtues of AI to the public internet; the corporations don't need help selling the thing, it's already ubiquitous. if you want to have nuanced discussion about AI w/ friends then yeah sure why not

i'm not saying you're wrong, i'm saying i don't think it's worth communicating in the face of billions of dollars of corporate interest. AI very clearly propagates misinformation and bad actors use it to actively CREATE mundane tasks and thus it is a net bad. it's easy to say "AI is bad" and move on

your position implies the existence of some group of people who are tech literate enough to find domains AI is good at but they just needed someone to tell them that to get started? i'm not convinced this is a large group. for the large majority of people AI reinforces doing bad tasks poorly.

it also makes the result worse than someone who would care about the tasks. we shouldn't be okay with putting the wrong people on the wrong tasks and have them create worse results than a human would. we need to rethink the whole system.

ok, i can attack this argument too -- friction is good for change. if AI exists to reduce friction, then using it as a bandaid for tasks people don't want to do actively makes society worse. instead of finding a way to reduce mundane work, it reinforces it.

to be clear, my position isn't "say things that are untrue", but i do think nuance in the discussion of AI is NOT warranted because there's infinite money pushing the nuance angle. just say AI is bad and move on. any gained utility for the nuance is lost in the general sentiment.
