For Dems, right-to-work challenges some Dems’ ideological commitment to labor unions. Permitting reform requires confronting environmentalists and the housing story promotes Abundance politics. It’s easier (but wrong) to blame NAFTA + neoliberalism. 4/4

Republicans want to think we can tariff our way back to Ohio circa 1975. We cannot. They really want trade to be the culprit for Rust Belt decline; it mostly isn’t. They are also unwilling to admit how much immigration has helped the South. 3/4

It was a combination of right-to-work, cheap electricity (driven in part by fossil fuels), fast permitting, more housing construction and thus relatively lower housing costs, immigration, and globalization. This challenges both parties…. 2/4
