it's also just a little bit suspicious - if you have friends who appreciate you for who you are, why do you need to gas yourself up externally? do you (1) not have friends who appreciate you? or (2) do you crave more validation than you already get? it gives off a pretty bad vibe.

someone can be the most important person in the world, but if they don't demonstrate their value to me and instead keep shoving a message of self-importance in my face then I don't have a reason to acknowledge it. I'm not a super hard person to impress, either - I try to make people feel welcome

for me it's show don't tell. if someone has to constantly verbalize how important they are it comes off as insecure and attention-seeking, especially if they (socially) don't embody it. I don't get disgusted but if someone takes up audio bandwidth over something like this I get annoyed.
