These are the ones they use on the car number plates. Fun for seeing/judging how far people have travelled: a 黑 in Yunnan, a 粵 in Inner Mongolia, or suchlike.

Since it has been formally announced we have moved to the far more important story, did it hurt the lobby's feelings?

I think this is quite common for a lot of people. Some have gone to university here, many have come to work here, but they have never had cause (or the opportunity) to learn the equivalent words in their native tongue, to the extent that, e.g. using a computer in that language is “weird”.

A colleague of mine has a similar problem, having left at a similar age: he finds it very odd to be back in France, being the one who is “vousvoyed”, so to speak, and who should, er, “tutoy” everyone else.
