"I know that a country without secure borders is a less safe country for those who look like me," she said. But the Guardian understands the harshness of Mahmood's plans has led to signifcant unease among senior Labour aides and ministers, with at least one on resignation watch. Two said they were particularly concerned about the plans to ramp up deportations of refugee families, including those with children. Charities warned it would risk "another Windrush scandal" and leave refugees in near-permanent limbo, with children liable to be unrooted from schools and adults unable to build careers, and make integration harder.

We've defended the hotel before from a bigger crowd than the pathetic "Bristol Patriots" have ever managed to gather and we have no doubt that we will do it again. Every time "Bristol Patriots" have attempted to march over the past few months - 09 August, 23 August, 07 September, 05 October - we have successfully outnumbered them, outmanouvered them, and humiliated them. Their attempt to take the streets and normalise far-right marches in Bristol has been thus far thwarted, thanks to everyone who have come out to oppose them. Our work, however, is not yet complete. Just a few days after the riot at the Mercure last year, thousands of people came out to fill Old Market and block racists from marching through our communities. This is what Bristol is about. This time, we call out to replicate this- to fill the space outside the Mercure with thousands and show those staying in the hotel that Bristol stands with them and that they are welcome here. Bring your friends, your families, your colleagues, and even bring your gran this time too. Tie your shoe laces. Pack some snacks and water; grab a bust card from a legal observer. The Bristol Defendant Solidarity number is 07510 283424. Write this on your arm and they will help you out if you or anyone you know is arrested. You should wear a mask, even if you don't think you need to. This helps people who need to keep their identities hidden; it helps them blend into a crowd. Don't talk to cops, especially the ones in the blue bibs. They might try and strike up conversation, but their intention is to gather information to allow them to corrall and control the crowd. None of them are there to protect you, this is a job we take on collectively. Don't bring your phone. An affinity group is a small group of people who stick and work together. Form one! You should communicate with each other as much as possible. Wear nondescript clothing and ideally not your everyday trainers. Keep turning up, you're doing great sweetie. And remember: we are all Bristol Antifascists.
