I think this from @garbageday.email is possibly one of the most important questions that sits within the control of the current Democratic Party & people who might run for office as Democrats in the next two cycles

And, incidentally, I think working with candidates with Reddit histories like Platner’s or “pro-Hamas” Soundcloud rap like Mamdani’s — or whatever else gets unearthed about the messy digital lives of young millennial Democratic candidates — would help answer the single biggest question that loomed over the gargantuan No King’s Day rallies this week. Yes, the No Kings Days are good at getting people out into the streets, but there’s still no hint at what comes next. You cannot organize the biggest protests in US history and expect people to just go and vote for Chuck Schumer or Hakeem Jeffries again. And there is clearly a desire for something more after this weekend.

In Chicago on Saturday, the city’s mayor, Brandon Johnson, called for a general strike. But anything that audacious is going to take a lot of support from a lot of different kinds of people, not just the warm and cuddly libs that dance at marches. You’re going to need leftists, unions, antifascists, Palestinians, trans people, and all the young men and women, both running for office and voting, who do not fit the focus group-tested rubric that Democrats still refuse to deviate from. And that will change the Democratic Party. Which is a good thing. Because if the Democratic Party survives it absolutely cannot look like the Democratic Party that brought us here.

Before we go any further here we have to - yet again - state very clearly that "antifa" isn't a thing. It's not an organization. It doesn't have members. It's fake. It's a nickname for antifascism, the (mostly) left-wing political opposition to fascism. There are symbols, practices, and songs that antifascist movements across history have used, but there is no head of antifa handing out molotov cocktails and balaclavas to people. In fact, that three arrows sign you sometimes see at protests was first created by the Social Democratic Party of Germany during the Weimar Republic (more on that in a sec). And "Bella Ciao," the antifa song getting attention after it was written on a bullet used by alleged Charlie Kirk killer Tyler Robinson, is believed to have started as a 19th century Italian worker song. Who knows, depending on how things go, maybe giant frog costumes will become an antifascist protest symbol for future generations. In several Asian countries right now, the flag from One Piece is going through a similar transformation. But the Trump administration can't acknowledge any of this.

President Donald Trump is desperate for an enemy to justify the extreme force he wants to deploy on blue states and is trying his hardest to convince people that antifa is so dangerous that, as Attorney General Pam Bondi said at the roundtable this week, they need to be exterminated like ISIS or Hamas. The Trump administration also has a nearly pathological habit of accusing their enemies of being exactly like them. Which is why they think the left is a dark money-funded domestic terror cell full of pedophiles and spree shooters that wants to destroy America.

Usually, arguments on Bluesky aren’t newsworthy enough to cover. But an argument that started last week has drawn in the site’s developers and owners, led to action outside the website’s moderation system, and has probably been the most serious test of the platform’s social fabric since the post-Trump 2.0 exodus.
Like most Bluesky beef, it started with people who couldn’t agree on how seriously to take a post. Jay Graber, the site’s cofounder and CEO, was joking around last week with a developer and board member for the site, Jerry Chen. Chen quoted the old “So you hate waffles?” meme about Twitter arguments, and Graber replied “Too real. We’re going to try to fix this. Social media doesn’t have to be this way.”
User antioccident then asked, “have y’all banned Jesse Singal yet or”, and Graber replied “WAFFLES.”
It is true that this is the usual way Bluesky arguments start, but it’s also not weird to hold the person in charge of a website to more serious standards on that website. As Anil Dash wrote, “If you’re the CEO of a platform with millions of users, you don’t get to have as much fun on that platform, period.”
But Graber has unfortunately responded by posting through it, making jokes that were picked up by Singal (the anti-trans journalist who became the most-blocked account on Bluesky last year after attempting to “colonize” the platform). To make things worse, Graber is also seriously defending herself, trying to frame pissing off the site’s users as an effort to drive decentralization, while also allegedly hiding posts and banning users who criticize her, without the site’s usual moderation system.
Given the people who are still angry about Singal’s presence were already unhappy with Bluesky’s new community guidelines, it’s easy to see why this is such an adversarial move by Graber that she’s even drawing comparisons to Something Awful’s Lowtax.

Despite this, there’s one source of news about the shooting that’s gotten a lot of attention in September: Us, apparently. According to Graphtreon, Panic World was the fastest-growing Patreon in September for the “podcast” category, with over 1,300 new subscribers this month. Our own reckoning puts as as number 12 across the whole website — first place, of course, goes to a porn game with over 3,300 new Patrons — but we’ve never even come close to making our own lists before, so we think we’ve earned the brag.
