In the spirit of the OP I'll share that the first time I found a shiny (geodude, in pokemon emerald) they were so sporadically known that I told my friend "Look, my game's glitched!" and we both celebrated when the "glitch" persisted after capture, before we knew better. x3

I thought about this as I was typing it! Someone mentioning to a silphco distributor that they do it for retention or w/e and the reps like "I love it!" Ultinately it's fiction, so our minds are the final arbiters.

my gaming preferences tend to be unreasonable and fixated and not aligned with user-friendliness, so I do like my shinies scarce.

this does have small effects on flavor, like establishing that a free premier ball for every ten pokeballs is store policy and not the proprietor feeling magnanimous or making a spur-of-the-moment choice (which is how I used to read it). the demysticization of shinies is the same way, kills allure.

I re-read this and I think the fundamental disconnect is seeing accomplishments versus accomplishing things. I don't want to master something to see the mastery on my profile, I want to master it to see everything there is to see, turn the game upside-down and shake it until nothing else comes out.

I guess we have different standards for it! I understand the utility for stuff like competitive pokemon, and I don't assign a moral judgment to it, but I do consider it cheating to use save data you're not responsible for as your own.

How I wish that were true!
