I think Stallman's greatest contribution has been the GPL - the license. Right now, some distros are replacing coreutils with uutils. It would be hard to argue one over the other based on performance, but I definitely prefer the coreutils with the GPL license than uutils with the MIT license.

And today Linus Torvalds is more well known than Ken Thompson or Dennis Ritchie
