He emphasized that if you are able to frame the marketing process for your game as an enjoyable and creative experience you are likely to get much better results.

He encouraged other developers, especially those with limited budgets, to try as many approaches as possible when marketing and to hone in on positive signals. He describes the approach as not chasing trends, but creating memes.

It was a session focused on giving designers a stronger foundation for using narrative intentionally - not just to tell stories, but to create meaningful reactions as the strongest memories are made by emotional moments.

Thank you so much to Winter for such an engaging, thought-provoking talk!
December 12, 2025 at 7:30 PM
Her talk covered 4 core areas:
• Why narrative design matters
• How story & narrative differ
• The Rule of Three
• The Ladder of Abstraction

Winter also explored how structured storytelling can activate powerful neurochemical responses, helping players form emotional connections & stay engaged.

She opened with a clear goal: to give the audience practical tools for analyzing and understanding stories so they can more deliberately guide player behavior through underlying narrative.

Her talk reinforced the idea that forward momentum and embracing imperfection are often what lead to real improvement, and what can separate completed projects from those that never quite make it to the finish line.

It was a very healthy and energizing reminder to us all, thank you Lóa!

In the end, all of the best pots came from the group that focused on quantity and experimentation over perfection.

Lóa connected this idea to game dev, highlighting the value of habits that can fade over time - testing early, scoping realistically, setting clear milestones & shipping frequently.

She spoke about how students sometimes end up finishing more games than even some seasoned developers, and illustrated this through the parable of the pottery class: a pottery teacher tasked one group of students with making a single perfect pot over a month, and another to make a new pot every day.

It was an honest look at the parts of game design that happen outside of design documents, and a reminder of how much those skills matter in helping designers succeed long-term.

We're very grateful to Greg for setting the tone for RGS 2025 with such a thoughtful and insightful session! 💚
December 7, 2025 at 4:32 PM
Greg reflected on what he's learned over 20+ years in game dev, focusing on the lessons designers rarely get taught formally - like navigating creative disagreements, communicating across teams, working within production realities, and handling the diplomacy of collaborative, creative work.
