The podcast Criminal did a story about this a few years ago. The one and only time I’d ever heard about it until you brought it up.
Episode 169: Masquerade (7.16.21)
The story of a cryptic children’s book, a real-life treasure hunt, and its very mysterious winner: “He refused to be on camera. It’s just his voice. His wife even asks that they disguise his voice, bu...

You can bring in Ashton Kutcher instead.

Ah, see that I didn’t know. When I first heard about it, if Wang was leaving they’d have brought a man on to replace him.

So if you’re right, poor Ensign Kim once again doesn’t really factor into anything of consequence. That’s actually even more poetic. I kind of like that.

Obama trounced the replacement to become Senator. That gave him the platform and momentum to run for president.

Supposedly either Kes or Kim was going, so when Wang hit People Magazine sexy list, Kim was spared. Jeri Ryan was cast. Her husband was a shit and her being in LA didn’t help, so they divorced. Jack Ryan’s kinks came out during the 2004 IL Senate race. He dropped out, and the replacement was awful.

That’s a pretty good one. My favorite is still that Ensign Harry Kim was so sexy that Barack Obama became president.

Yes! And there was a documentary recently about it on Disney+ that was, IMO, a bit dull (and uses AI, so….eh). However, seeing the remastered film footage was INCREDIBLE! Hurley’s efforts were amazing.

Read it after Endurance, didn’t like it as much. It was alright, but it just couldn’t hold up to Endurance.

I hear The Terror is also very good but haven’t read it yet, only seen the first season of the TV series (which WAS quite good).

Thanks for the recommendation! Added to the list!

Had to scroll a lot more than I expected before seeing this. One of the better books I’d read in a long time and reads as thrillingly as fiction in most places. So good!

I agree. The Wager felt like a less-good Endurance.

@99pi.org did a yearlong read-along with this. Never would’ve gotten through it otherwise. Highly recommend following their pace and schedule!

Some of the worst Star Trek plot. Some of the best Star Trek characterization. It’s such an oddity.

These days “a good time at the pictures” is all I’m really after so this is going straight to the list.

Back in September, CNN had a headline, "William Shatner is fine but has a warning for all of us," which I honestly appreciated.
