my personal suspicion is that current society has done a very good job of separating Creative Work Available For Purchase from The Human People Making The Work (who need to eat)

It is bizarre! Like, comic artists shouldn't have to depend on selling those pages to actually make money. Fandom is propping the whole thing up when corporations could just be paying more.

Crunchy timelines burn people out. Low page rates and advances burn people out. Give a cartoonist a living salary and the time to work, and you are investing in a long-term CAREER. Books get passed around. Audiences grow over TIME. Books don't have to be first-day bestsellers to be successful.

I'll add that I happen to be in a position where I am currently making a living off of graphic novel work. It's a split between royalties, advances, and school visits.

I think that comics would be so much healthier if publishers could look forward and invest in our FUTURE.
