Decoding of AV timing was most precise in colliculus regions encoding the visual periphery. This may enhance responses to unattended stimuli - crucial function for survival.

We tested how nonlinear integration affects sensory encoding by comparing real vs. synthetic responses (where AV signals were linearly added). The result? Nonlinear integration preserves precise AV timing, while linear addition severely reduces decoding accuracy.

We presented visual and auditory stimuli at different time intervals to mice while recording superior colliculus activity. We found diverse multisensory neurons, many integrating AV signals nonlinearly based on timing—these are multisensory delay-tuned neurons.
