Even that’s not the deepest worry. “The painful truth,” Elliot Cosgrove, the rabbi of Park Avenue Synagogue, observed in his Saturday sermon, is that “Mamdani’s anti-Zionist rhetoric not only appeals to his base but seems to come with no downside breakage. What business does an American mayoral candidate have weighing in on foreign policy unless it scores points at the ballot box? I don’t doubt that Mamdani’s anti-Zionism is heartfelt and sincere, but its instrumentalization as an election talking point should frighten you in that it says more about the sensibilities of our fellow New Yorkers than it does about Mamdani himself.” In the long, sorry tale of anti-Jewish politics, it hasn’t just been the prejudice of a few that’s led Jews to grief. It’s been the supine indifference of the many. That’s what frightens Jews like me.

I mean the deal the administration reached with Columbia University to begin the process of having $400 million in federal funding restored in exchange for the school agreeing to ban the use of face-covering masks in protests that violate school policies, hire internal security to stop disruptive protests and put its Middle Eastern, South Asian and African studies department under review. I know I’m going to drive some of our readers around the bend, but I think the president did the university a favor. Now it can blame Evil Donald for making it do what it should have done a year ago. Gail: Sorry, I just don’t like the idea of trying to dictate a university’s curriculum by threatening to withdraw federal funds, more than half of which are being used for medical and scientific research. Bret: I would have been more sympathetic to Columbia if it had shown it was able and willing to clean its own house.

Conservatism, as you know, is a complete mess in America right now. But reading conservative authors like Edmund Burke, Samuel Johnson, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Gertrude Himmelfarb and James Q. Wilson does give you an adequate appreciation for the power of nonmaterial forces — culture, moral norms, traditions, religious ideals, personal responsibility and community cohesion. That body of work teaches you, as Burke wrote, that manners and morals are more important than laws. You should have limited expectations about politics because not everything can be solved with a policy. Many years ago, I came across a study that neatly illustrated the power of culture. The researcher Nima Sanandaji calculated the poverty rate of Americans with Swedish ancestry. It was 6.7 percent. They also looked at the poverty rate in Sweden, using the American standard of poverty, and it was also 6.7 percent. Different political systems, same outcome. Today the social sciences are the narrow doorway all of human knowledge has to pass through if it’s going to influence policymaking. We want studies! The social sciences are great. I use them all the time. But when overly quantitative, they can misrepresent reality. They see only what can be quantified. They see only masses of people whose data can be tabulated, not unique individuals. As Christian Smith, a Notre Dame sociologist, has been arguing for decades, the social scientists obliterate the subjective experiences of the people they study. Human agency disappears if research subjects are reduced to a bunch of variables that can be correlated. People who overly rely on social science knowledge are going to tend to focus on money because it can be counted more easily than culture. People who rely on government to solve problems will tend to overemphasize the power of money because that’s the thing government most easily controls.

Meanwhile deporting law-abiding immigrants is just “good policy that’s gone too far”
Some of this is good policy that’s gone too far: We no longer have a migration crisis, an achievement that should not have eluded the Biden administration for most of its term and that cost the Democrats dearly. But Americans want an immigration policy that secures the border and deports criminals, not one that goes after law-abiding, hardworking undocumented immigrants on whom many areas of the economy depend and who should be given a viable path to citizenship.

All of this leaves plenty to fear, dislike and even despise when it comes to this administration. We do not strengthen alliances by threatening to seize the territory of our allies. We do not depoliticize justice by accusing a former president of treason or threatening to “go after people.” We do not safeguard free speech by suing journalists. We do not strengthen the rule of law by shaking down law firms. We do not make America healthy again by promoting medical quackery.

"Hispanic concentration camp" Fernando tells New Times he's been at the facility since July 3, when state officials began transferring the first detainees to the hastily-built compound. He was among the earliest to arrive, processed as the 71st detainee. Since arriving, he says he's endured chaotic and unsanitary conditions: swarms of colossal mosquitoes, extreme temperature swings from freezing to sweltering, and only three showers total. He's still wearing the same orange jumpsuit he was given on day one. At one point, he says the toilets stopped flushing. When staff failed to fix the problem, detainees were forced to remove human waste — by picking it up with their hands and moving it elsewhere themselves — to use the bathroom, all with little to no privacy. Fernando describes the site as a "Hispanic concentration camp" full of mostly working-class immigrants. "We came here for opportunity," Carla says, "and then we get mistreated." Despite the harsh conditions, Fernando says he's found a sense of community with the other men at the facility, who, like himself, came to the U.S. to work in construction, roofing, or other physically demanding jobs. "My dad tells me, 'We're all like a family in there eating together,'" Carla says. "It's the Hispanic community."

To ICE, the graffiti case meant Harsono “now poses a threat to U.S. public safety,” the government memo read. Federal officials planned to “immediately pursue removal” for Harsono, and the State Department agreed not to tell him about his visa revocation, the memo read. “Due to ongoing ICE operational security, this revocation will therefore be silent,” the memo read. Harsono said he believes his past participation in social justice protests after George Floyd’s killing in 2020 may also have been a factor. On April 16, 2021, Harsono joined about 1,000 people demonstrating over Floyd’s killing by Minneapolis police and the recent death of Daunte Wright by police in Brooklyn Center. He was arrested for unlawful assembly after the protest, though the charge was dismissed. His wife and attorney said agents and lawyers cited Harsono’s protest history during detention proceedings. Harsono said he protested because growing up, he had been inspired by the American ideal of freedom of speech. “I was scared to voice my opinion back in Indonesia,” he said. “Now, you know, I’m in America, I could do that now.”

From The American Prospect: IN SHORT, DEMOCRATS LOST THE PROPAGANDA WAR, which brings me back to local news. A poll back in April, before Biden dropped out, found that he was winning voters who get their news from newspapers by 49 percentage points, while Trump was winning those who don’t follow political news at all by 26 points. No doubt that is partly demographics, but also partly due to opportunity: In a large chunk of the country, there is no local paper even available, and in a much larger chunk the few papers that remain are private equity–gutted carcasses with little aside from Associated Press reprints. A recent study by Paul Farhi and John Volk at Northwestern found an even more stark gap in the worst-off counties. Trump won 91 percent of “news desert” counties—where there is no local coverage of any kind—by an average of 54 percentage points. Notably, several of these are heavily Latino counties on the southern Texas border, which saw enormous swings toward Trump. @sarabethb.bsky.social: Big news!
