Btw: I don't dismiss the research and people verifying hypotheses. But what annoys me the most is: a) confidence, arrogance, and dismissal of art (whether of making fun gameplay, or beautiful assets) and effort. b) Pure bullshit. Holtz or Altman promised a "full holodeck" by the end of 2024. Oops.

S1E1 Encounter at Farpoint is one of the best TNG eps ever made but theres an immediate drop-off in quality and concept until ~S4 or so

wow, now that is a cool article, I'll check it out

LLMs would be hilarious in these contexts. "You're right, there are 2 protons in a hydrogen atom!"

I think Dyson spheres resonate because in comparison to ZPE there's a clear path towards how they'd work today (ie lots of solar panels in orbit). But yes the logistics fall apart at scale.

Something I see often in SF is controlled fusion reactors in space (mini stars) which feel more feasible

it's firmly in the fantasy realm for sure, but do you think it's dumb from a logistics point of view, or an efficiency one? do you think we can do better than fusion reactions?
