I used to have a number of friends from going to conventions who won't give me the time of day since I haven't been to one for the last few years.
Really sucks to learn how small some bonds are that I thought were stronger and more genuine than that.

YUP. This is how it is with gaming, conventions, nerd events, concerts; the list goes on.
And it is often perceived as "Oh. This person can't keep up with things? Guess we have nothing in common or things to talk about so fuck 'em."

As much as I hate my current situation, one that is WAY TOO common for many Americans, I would rather be poor and struggling than contributing to a rampant problem that makes me treat my fellow citizens like dirt.

What good is wealth if it turns you into a deplorable and uncaring asshole?
Is going to Disney World three times a year and eating at Michelin star restaurants really worth stepping on the very people who fought in the trenches with you?

Look. I'm all for celebrating people getting out of poverty. When one of us wins, we should cheer that. But far too often it seems to pull people from being out of touch. People I worked with at Starbucks who move on seem to turn their nose up at baristas now as if they are now better than them.
