The problem of democracy (and AI)! There are many, I suppose, and we discuss them in this new episode of Pondering AI! Always a great pleasure and helpful to discuss the issues I'm preoccupied with in this manner.

What's the value of academic articles and doing research? The product or the process?

This article has been a long process, and how I've processed the ongoing AI disruption of research. I use it very little, and while it's clearly not all bad, I argue for caution.

August cover of CACM just dropped, and it’s my article. 😳

It’s about Twitter/X and how we should seriously consider the power - and obligation - we have to effect change when we’re aware of harms and have the capacity to influence others. Action AI Ethics!

Today, the fifth column in America would be the ones *defending* liberty, unity, justice, and equality. The saboteurs are in office.

The environmental impact of AI seems to be quite elusive. But there are standardised methods we could draw on to help improve our analyses. In this conference article, Kari-Anne Lyng and I present the LCA method and discuss how it can be used to assess AI impacts. doi.org/10.1007/978-...

New blog post in @acm.org's Blog. About writing things (like blog posts).

"It feels like my writing—and thus my thinking—is under attack by the creeping and ubiquitous implementation of various LLMs into all of the tools that I use."

I look to the past for protection. cacm.acm.org/blogcacm/too...

Sometimes social media meaningfully connects people. It connected me with @evanselinger.bsky.social a couple years ago, and we’ve written some pieces together. Yesterday, however, we happened to be able to meet up in Paris!

Here's a thing very long in the making. Several years, in fact. Judging from my own experience, there is still a need to thoroughly evaluate whether, how, and to what extent we should use generative AI in research. Really appreciate input on this preprint! 🙏 papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.... #ai

To preprint or not to preprint? AI ethics is a field where people with very different backgrounds meet. And very different publication practices. In this article, I take stock of the benefits and challenges for the AI ethics field, and seek common ground. doi.org/10.1145/3699... @acm.org
