LORD OF THE RINGS. Filming of Peter Jackson trilogy began Oct 11, 1999. The Balrog Gatefold Folder [created for May 1999 Cannes Film Festival] is earliest concept art promotional piece I know of. Link shares what I've learned about it over the years.

NEW VERSION OF "PYRAMID OF ABUSE." I’ve blogged about spiritual abuse ~20 years. From feedback, it’s clear the most widely helpful resource I’ve produced has been my Pyramid of Abuse graphic, and the descriptions of roles people play in a toxic system.

The 16th Man -- emphasis on how Nelson Mandela's personal support and encouragement of the Springbok's rugby team released them to play a substantive role in national reconciliation and transformation.

There are several other great documentaries about the 1995 Rugby World Cup and racial reconciliation in post-Apartheid South Africa.

Reconciliation: Mandela's Miracle -- emphasis on the political dimensions of peace-making and nation-building.

INVICTUS. June 24th marks 30 years since the South African Springboks won the Rugby World Cup. This would be a great time to revisit the movie Invictus, to reflect on how Nelson Mandela and others used sports for peace-making and nation-building in post-Apartheid South Africa -- skills that we need.

BOOK REVIEW: PRESENCE BASED WITNESS BY DAVID FITCH AND GINO CURCURUTO 🧵

The way my brain works is to look for systems of interconnected items, zoom in on details, and find helpful patterns. So I appreciate frameworks that take some large system or other and break it down into a process that shows

We eventually see rebels who are stylists and game-makers, politicians and peacekeepers, merchants and workers, Capitol and District, citizen survivors and Hunger Games victors.

How did they get to a point of moving beyond trauma to action?

THOUGHTS ON RESISTANCE MOVEMENTS IN THE HUNGER GAMES SAGA.

To prepare for next month’s release of Sunrise on the Reaping, I’ve been listening to the audiobooks of The Hunger Games trilogy plus The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

SUNRISE ON THE REAPING and resistance ...

Haymitch: "Even if the unthinkable happens and [my little brother's] name gets drawn, he's got to suck it up. Put on the bravest face he can muster and climb onto that stage because resistance is not an option."

Maybe not an option at the reaping, but ...

SOME DYNAMICS OF CHAOS -- from the Compass of Social Control Cultures. 🧵

Capricious choices and changes create instability, insecurity, and a lack of confidence in leadership, whether they create chaos by their ineptitude or intentionally.

Purposeful chaos keeps victims in constant reactive mode.

THE HUNGER GAMES NOTES. Ten years ago, I went live with a media resource/reference site on The Hunger Games series.

I've updated it periodically, but with Sunrise on the Reaping due out in March, it's time to upload newer media + materials.

Check it out!

To put this into practice, I've been listening lately to the Complete Recordings series of the scores from The LOTR movie trilogy. I've lost track of how many times I've watched the entire extended versions of the trilogy (likely 150-200 times in 20 years). I've listened to the Complete Recordings

WHAT'S IN AN "INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX"? 🧵

This evening's farewell address by President Biden mentioned President Eisenhower's use of the term "military industrial complex" as a warning to our current situation of a tech industrial complex.

Okay, not flavorite foodish, but a favorite tradition. Each year, for about the last 50 or so, our front door hanger is this beglittered wreath made of used computer cards (remember those???). An elementary school class made this for my Mom when she was secretary of their school in the 1970s.

We made dozen of "Santa Cookies." The process takes several days, as frosting or egg wash has to set, in between adding raisins for eyes, red sugar for the cap, shredded coconut for the beard, painting cheeks-nose-lips. They're real works of art and made for a fun annual gift for family and friends.

THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES.

"I've no use for liars. What are lies but attempts to conceal some sort of weakness?"

Dr. Volumnia Gaul, Head Gamemaker for the Hunger Games, is Hobbesian to the core. She believes the only way to mitigate human nature is through control.

One of my favorite thought-provoking quotes from Frank Herbert on one of his favorite subjects, power and its misuses.

The actual quote is from Chapterhouse: Dune, but I appreciated finding it in the SyFy Channel promo materials for their Children of Dune TV mini-series.
