There are 1.4 billion Catholics, and if the church decides to support UBI, it will have a vast reach to sway politicians in 100+ countries on almost every continent.

Some people scoff at the notion of the Catholic Church concerning itself with AI. If they do, they're underestimating the Church's vast soft power. Vatican City might be the world's smallest state, but the Catholic Church is arguably the preeminent global superpower when it comes to soft power.

It will be interesting to see what Pope Leo XIV calls for. Universal Basic Income? It wouldn't surprise me. The day is soon coming when humans won't be able to economically compete with ultra-cheap AI/robot-employee staffed businesses.

The new pope's choice of name was deliberate; he chose it to honor Pope Leo XIII , Pope from 1878 - 1903. Leo XIII is famous for taking a left-wing stance on workers' rights in response to the Industrial Revolution, and calling for state pensions, social security, and other social democracy reforms.

3/3 - I would also guess that if Chinese manufacturers can make and sell hatchback cars for 10,000 dollars they will be able to make robots like this for less.

When that day comes, we will very quickly have a new type of society and economy, though who knows what that will look like.

2/3 - I wonder how far away we are from humanoid robots that can perform most unskilled or semi-skilled work? Cleaning, factory work, stacking shelves etc etc

When you look at this it doesn't seem that far away.

Is there a term for when a country has a nervous breakdown? If not, someone should invent one. That's what watching the USA from outside is like right now. Conservatives in their mania phase. In the throws of a breakdown and heading to be sectioned & taken to the psych ward.

4/4 - As those billionaires embrace ever darker and more fascistic visions of the future, maybe we should be relieved they are all hobbling and weakening each other via open-source AI.

3/4 - So it seems the power of AI, or even AGI when it comes, may not be in the hands of a few Silicon Valley billionaires, but instead decentralized and democratized around the world.

2/4 - Meta embraced the trend of using open-source to weaken its competitors 18 months ago - in 2024, AI from places as diverse as France and China have been using the same tactic. That culminated in recent weeks in DeepSeek - the open-source AI that has become the world's most powerful.

Great article John. I wonder when these people will turn on each other, and Musk/Trump? Some of them truly believe the agenda is to improve their economic lives, and when much higher inflation makes them a lot poorer, & they realize the awful truth ....

Then again, why open-source everything and give its power so freely to everyone? Many people would have thought hoarding power to try and be No 1, as the US is doing, is better game play.

"It would be no surprise were China in the near future to win more friends and influence in Trump’s hemisphere. "

That last line should have been the lead. China is now ascendant in green energy, AI, robotics and transport tech, as a multi-failed biz owner leads the US backwards into fossil fuels.
