i can't give a perfect answer, but in the next couple weeks i hope to give us some tools to judge for ourselves. so look forward to a brief and uneducated look at Walter Benjamin's "Towards a Critique of Violence." should be fun.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
but is that worth seeing the powers that be close ranks and push the boot down harder. was the closer scrutiny even a result of the violence, or did it just get attention because of the shooting? i suppose that's a line everyone has to draw themselves.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
these are acts of organized violence or threats of violence against an already violent status quo though. more individual acts of violence may achieve some of their aims. after the united health care ceo shooting the company faced lawsuits and investigations.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
we could also talk about the anarchist resistance to francisco franko during the Spanish civil war, or more contemporary the Kurdish revolutionary movement's struggle against isis. suffice it to say, if people are trying to kill you and your friends you don't have to take it.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
a good example is the armed patrols of the Black Panthers aimed at stopping police killings. we know this was effective because some of the first gun legislation was passed to specifically stop it.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
so is there no place for violent propaganda of the deed in modern anarchism? now i repeat, i'm not advocating you go commit violence. but i would argue that community defense is the time to at least have the capacity for violence.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
i'd also point out that the state doesn't really seem to need an excuse to be more brutal and authoritarian.

another argument might be that it dissuades the state from suppressing us if we always take revenge. i'm not sure about this either. Sacco and Vanzetti still went to the electric chair.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
so why do it? well ostensibly it raises class conciousness and pushes the working class towards revolution by forcing the state to be more brutal and authoritarian. these days we call that idea accelerationist.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
so we cannot say that propaganda of the deed is not violent. bombings and political assassinations would pepper the 19th and 20th century. not all anarchist, obviously, which we'll get into in later weeks, but we can't disown this legacy.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
however in the coming decades, the winter palace in Moscow would be bombed, Tsar Alexander II was killed by a bomb, the Haymarket Affair would be set off by a bomb, and Mario Buda would use a wagon full of dynamite to bomb Wallstreet, echoing future use of car bombs.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
he framed this as propaganda by the deed to raise class conciousness. so we see that the phrase was not always associated with violence.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
so the tenor of the time was making propaganda by the deed more associated with violence. but not always. for example to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the Paris Commune French socialist politician Paul Brousse carries a red flag through the streets of Bern Switzerland.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
now in the 1870's paris was briefly under control of a socialist people's council in an event known as "the Paris Commune." It's a long history, but in the end it was crushed by french military force. this pushed many socialists towards greater extremism.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
this all starts around the 19th century. an italian socialist thinker and revolutionary, Carlo Piscane in 1857 wrote that "ideas result from deeds." this would set off a history of hot debate in the anarcho socialist movement. what propaganda of the deed means would take shape.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
so, a short intro to propaganda by the deed. we straight fro. from wikipedia here, but i'll try to make it an easier read.

propaganda by the deed refers to direct action taken to influence public opinion. it is usually, though not always, associated with violence.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
yes the state uses more violence than any resistance movement ever has, but we have to be honest about how our movement has used violence. particularly terrorist violence, because if we don't understand the fullness of our past we will make the same mistakes in the future.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
now, i want to be very clear about some things up top: we are not advocating for violence! we are just examining it's historical and contemporary use with a critical eye. i also don't want to frame anarchism as a violent movement. but we need to be clear headed in our critiques...
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
so this is gonna happen over a few weeks, but i wanted to put my inspiration up top. but before we get to a larger critique of violence i think we need to confront how violence is used in anarchism and intersects with anarchist theory. yep, it's time to talk about propaganda of the deed!
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
but the show got us thinking about who gets to use violence (spoiler: the state) and how they justify that violence. i think it is revealing about how states legitimize their authoritarian tendencies, and how law does little to actually protect people.
November 14, 2025 at 3:33 AM
wow! it's still not snowing around here, pretty warm actually!
November 7, 2025 at 7:18 PM
try pouncing it!
